Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition where a person experiences unwanted, distressing thoughts (obsessions) and feels the urge to repeat certain actions or rituals (compulsions) to try to ease the anxiety caused by those thoughts.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Obsessions: Recurrent, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety or distress (e.g., fear of germs, harming someone, or making a mistake).
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared outcome (e.g., washing hands, checking things multiple times, counting).
Feeling like the compulsions must be done perfectly or something bad will happen if they’re not.
Spending a lot of time on these thoughts and behaviors, which can interfere with daily life.
EXAMPLES
Cleaning/Washing: Excessive hand washing, cleaning, or avoiding things that are considered "dirty."
Checking: Repeatedly checking locks, appliances, or other things to make sure they are safe.
Counting/Arranging: Feeling the need to arrange items in a specific way or count certain actions a set number of times.
Reassurance Seeking: Asking others for reassurance or repeatedly seeking confirmation to reduce anxiety.
MANAGEMENT
OCD is treatable with therapy, especially Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and sometimes medication. Many people with OCD find relief and are able to regain control of their lives with the right support and treatment.
